At Homes for Kids, the experience and outcomes of the children and young people we support are central to everything we do. We want to support every child and young person to lead a good life: a life with genuine agency and choice, a life of opportunity and stability, and a life each child and young person values.
This life can only be defined by each unique individual. For Homes for Kids to deliver the outcomes we strive for each day, care cannot be based on assumptions and hubris. Care must be moulded by the voices of the children and young people we support, while being balanced by the rights of the individual and their best interests.
We are acutely aware that this is a very easy and fashionable thing to say. However, for Homes for Kids, child-centred care and the voice of the child are not slogans, but standards. Here is how we will keep this promise to the children and young people in our care:
- Our team will take time to fully understand each individual’s story, needs and preferences and use this to inform care plans, activities and therapeutic input. The recycling of surpluses and access to unrestricted income will allow Homes for Kids to wrap the best support around each child and young person. What’s more, we will embrace and value each individual in their entirety and support them to develop and be confident in their own identity.
- We will help children and young people to formulate their own ambitious goals, provide the necessary support and resources for them to achieve these things and celebrate them when they do.
- Children and young people will lie at the heart of the household and daily routines, as you would expect in any family home.
- We will actively involve children and young people in decision-making, from integrating children into recruitment and matching a key worker with each individual, to including children and young people in the interior design of their home.
- Children and young people will always be supported to access advocacy and develop the self-assurance to communicate their opinions, raise concerns and challenge decisions affecting their lives with confidence. We will use this feedback to inform the continual development of care so that our care reflects the evolving needs of each child.
- We are committed to building a stable team which will bring stability to children and young people who have often lacked it. This will enable children and young people to build deep and genuine relationships with carers, allowing trust and consistency to grow and giving them the security to focus on their childhood.
- Finally, Homes for Kids is a staunch advocate of active support, guiding children and young people towards independence and capability, widening their horizons and generating opportunity.
This collaborative approach will help Homes for Kids deliver exceptional child-centred care and ensure children and young people can look forward to futures they are excited by.
